The concept is simple. The execution requires discipline, especially in the early miles when you feel good and the crowd is pulling you forward. Here is why it works, what it feels like, and how to build it into your race plan.
What are negative splits?
A negative split means your second half time is faster than your first half time. In a marathon, that means miles 14 through 26.2 are covered more quickly than miles 1 through 13.1. In a 5K it might mean the final kilometer is your fastest. The principle scales to every distance.
The opposite — running a faster first half and fading in the second — is called a positive split. Even splits means both halves are equal. Of the three, negative or even splits almost always produce the best finishing time for a given fitness level, because they match effort to what your body can actually sustain.
Why negative splits produce faster times
Going out too fast has a physiological cost that is disproportionate to the time you gain. At higher efforts, you burn glycogen more rapidly and accumulate lactate faster than your body can clear it. The result is that going 20 seconds per mile too fast in the opening miles does not just cost you those 20 seconds — it accelerates glycogen depletion so you slow much more dramatically in the later miles than the early surplus justified.
Running conservatively in the first half keeps glycogen stores intact longer, keeps lactate at manageable levels, and means your muscles arrive at the later miles with more to give. When you feel strong at mile 18 of a marathon rather than broken, you can actually run faster — and the emotional momentum of passing other runners in the final third is a real performance boost.
What a negative split feels like in a race
The uncomfortable truth is that the first miles of a well-paced race should feel almost too easy. If mile 3 of a 10K feels relaxed and controlled, you are probably on pace. If it feels like you are racing, you are almost certainly too fast.
At the halfway point of a negative-split race, you should feel like you have something left. In a marathon, that point is mile 13.1 — you want to feel like you are in the race, not in survival mode. The second half is where the real racing begins, and starting it with reserves is what makes running it faster possible.

- Final 20 to 25 percent: if you still have something left, let yourself run a little faster.

Practicing negative splits in training
Long runs are the best place to build negative-split discipline. On your weekly long run, run the first half at easy pace and try to make the second half feel slightly more purposeful — not faster by the clock necessarily, but with a sense of finishing strong rather than limping in.
Tempo runs and marathon-pace workouts can also be structured as negative splits: start the first few miles slightly below threshold, then build to full effort in the second half. This trains both the physical pacing strategy and the mental habit of holding back before unleashing.
